The Detroit Tigers saw a highly anticipated return from veteran ace Justin Verlander spoiled Monday night, as the Arizona Diamondbacks built an early lead and held on for a 9–6 victory in Phoenix.
Verlander’s first regular-season start back in a Tigers uniform after years away carried plenty of emotion, but the results fell short. The right-hander struggled with command throughout the outing, allowing early traffic on the bases and falling behind hitters. Arizona capitalized quickly, jumping out to a multi-run lead in the opening innings and never fully relinquishing control.
The Diamondbacks’ offense set the tone early, highlighted by a three-run home run from Corbin Carroll that helped extend the lead to 5–0. Consistent hard contact and patient at-bats kept pressure on Detroit pitching, forcing the Tigers to play from behind for most of the night.
Despite the early deficit, Detroit mounted a late push. The Tigers broke through in the seventh inning, stringing together hits and taking advantage of shaky Arizona bullpen control. Key contributions from Dillon Dingler, Colt Keith, and Riley Greene fueled a rally that trimmed the deficit to just two runs at 8–6, briefly putting momentum on Detroit’s side.
However, Arizona responded immediately. A solo home run in the bottom half of the inning provided breathing room, and the Diamondbacks bullpen stabilized just enough to shut the door over the final frames.
Detroit’s offensive approach proved inconsistent throughout the game. While the late rally showed life, the lineup struggled with strikeouts and missed opportunities early, leaving multiple runners stranded and failing to capitalize on favorable counts.
In the end, the Tigers dropped to 2–2 on the young season, while the Diamondbacks secured their first win. The night ultimately served as a reminder that while Verlander’s return carries nostalgia and expectation, execution—particularly command on the mound and discipline at the plate—will determine how far this Tigers team can go.
