Dingler powers Tigers past Red Sox 6-2 as Detroit stays hot in Boston

BOSTON  Dillon Dingler delivered a career-caliber performance, driving in four runs and collecting four hits to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park.

Dingler set the tone early with an RBI double in the first inning and broke the game open in the fifth, launching a three-run homer off Boston starter Garrett Crochet. The blast capped a four-run inning that turned a tight game into a comfortable Detroit lead.

The Tigers have now won eight of their last nine games, continuing a sharp turnaround after snapping a lengthy road skid just one day earlier.

Detroit’s offense struck with two outs in the fifth inning. Jahmai Jones started the rally with a towering 423-foot home run off the base of the center-field stanchion, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead. After a walk and a single extended the inning, Dingler crushed a 96-mph fastball into the first row in center, putting Detroit firmly in control.

On the mound, Framber Valdez (2-1) delivered a strong outing for Detroit, allowing one run on three hits over his start while striking out seven and walking two.

Crochet (2-3), who entered the season as one of Boston’s top arms, continued to struggle. He allowed five runs over five innings, raising his ERA to 7.88. The outing followed a rough previous start in which he surrendered 10 earned runs while recording just five outs.

Boston’s offense again sputtered. Willson Contreras provided the lone highlight with a solo home run over the Green Monster, but the Red Sox have managed just four total runs through the first three games of the four-game series.

The game was played under cold, rainy conditions after a three-hour delay pushed back the start time at Fenway Park.

Up next

Detroit is expected to send Jack Flaherty (0-1, 4.05 ERA) to the mound against Boston right-hander Sonny Gray (2-1, 4.43 ERA) in Monday’s Patriots’ Day game, scheduled for an 11:05 a.m. first pitch.
