Mize Shines in Classic Pitcher’s Duel, but Tigers Fall 1–0 in Extra-Inning Heartbreaker

BOSTON — On a night built for pitchers, Casey Mize delivered one of the sharpest outings of his season — and one of the toughest no-decisions of his career.

The Detroit Tigers right-hander was nothing short of dominant Friday night at Fenway Park, matching zeros with Ranger Suárez in a tense, old-school duel. But despite Mize’s brilliance, Detroit fell 1–0 in 10 innings to the Boston Red Sox, extending a brutal road skid.

A Duel Worthy of October

For nine innings, offense never stood a chance.

Mize carved through Boston’s lineup with precision, command, and poise. Mixing his fastball and splitter effectively, he kept hitters off balance all night, refusing to give in even in tight counts. He didn’t allow a run — and more importantly, never allowed the game to speed up on him.

Across the diamond, Suárez was just as relentless. The left-hander matched Mize pitch-for-pitch, silencing Detroit’s bats and turning the game into a battle of patience and execution.

The result was a scoreless deadlock that felt more like postseason baseball than Game 20 of a long season.

Mize’s Statement Start

While the Tigers ultimately walked away empty-handed, Mize’s outing was a statement.

This was the version of Mize Detroit has been waiting for — efficient, composed, and in complete control. He attacked the strike zone early, limited hard contact, and worked deep into the game without unraveling.

In a season where consistency has been key, Friday night showed exactly what Mize is capable of when everything clicks.

Missed Opportunities Haunt Detroit

The Tigers, however, couldn’t capitalize.

Detroit’s offense struggled to generate pressure, continuing a troubling trend away from home. The loss marked their ninth straight road defeat, and even more staggering, they have now gone 56 consecutive innings without holding a lead on the road — a drought that underscores their early-season imbalance.

Despite a six-game winning streak entering the night, all of that momentum evaporated once the team left home.

Walk-Off Ends It

In the 10th inning, the stalemate finally broke.

With the automatic runner in place, Boston found its moment. Masataka Yoshida delivered the decisive blow, sending the Fenway crowd into celebration and sealing the 1–0 win.

It was a cruel ending for a game that deserved a different fate for Mize.

The Bigger Picture

At 10–10, the Tigers are a .500 team searching for identity — dominant at home, but unraveling on the road.

Friday night wasn’t about failure on the mound. It was about missed chances and a lineup that couldn’t support a near-flawless pitching performance.

If Detroit is going to contend, outings like Mize’s can’t go to waste.

Because on nights like this, when your ace gives you everything, one run should feel like an eternity.

Instead, it was the difference.
