The Detroit Tigers are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel regarding ace Justin Verlander’s injury, as the veteran right-hander continues to make progress in his recovery from hip inflammation.
Verlander, who has been sidelined since early April after being placed on the injured list, recently completed a bullpen session that team officials described as encouraging. Manager A.J. Hinch indicated the session showed reduced irritation in Verlander’s hip — a key step forward, even as the club remains cautious about rushing him back.
There is still no official timetable for his return, and the Tigers are expected to take a measured approach before advancing to simulated games or a minor league rehab assignment. Still, the positive update comes at a pivotal moment in the season.
Detroit has surged despite Verlander’s absence, winning nine of its last 12 games and climbing to within striking distance of the top spot in the American League Central. The recent stretch has been fueled largely by one of the league’s most effective starting rotations.
Reigning ace Tarik Skubal has been dominant, posting a 2.08 ERA with 33 strikeouts across five starts, while Casey Mize has followed closely with a 2.51 ERA and 32 strikeouts. Offseason addition Framber Valdez has added stability to the middle of the rotation, and Jack Flaherty and Keider Montero have provided valuable depth.
The Tigers’ pitching staff, widely viewed as a strength entering the season, has lived up to expectations — and could become even more formidable once Verlander returns.
Detroit’s ability to stay competitive without its future Hall of Famer underscores the depth and balance of the roster. But his presence could prove decisive as the team prepares for a challenging upcoming road trip and a tightening division race.
For now, the Tigers are content to let their rotation “hold down the fort,” as Hinch put it — knowing that reinforcements may soon be on the way.
