Flaherty will get you nowhere... Tigers lose 5 to 4

Flaherty Falters Again as Tigers Drop Series Opener to Rangers

The Detroit Tigers are searching for stability on the mound — and right now, it’s proving elusive.

Right-hander Jack Flaherty once again put the club in an early hole Friday night, failing to escape the fourth inning for the third consecutive start as the Tigers fell to the Texas Rangers. The outing continued a troubling trend for Flaherty, whose ERA has now climbed to 5.90 through seven starts, raising growing concerns about the reliability of a rotation piece the Tigers need to anchor games.

From the opening innings, Flaherty struggled to establish rhythm. Command issues and hittable pitches forced Detroit into damage control mode almost immediately, a position that has become all too familiar when he takes the mound. For a team trying to build consistency after an uneven April, early deficits are a formula for frustration — and Friday was no exception.

To their credit, the Tigers’ bullpen delivered a performance that deserved a better outcome. Left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus, right-hander Brenan Hanifee, lefty Brant Hurter, and veteran Burch Smith combined to cover the final 5⅓ innings, stabilizing the game and giving Detroit a chance to claw back. It was a gritty, professional effort from a relief corps that has been leaned on heavily in recent days.

But the early damage proved too much to overcome.

Flaherty’s struggles are particularly concerning given the expectations placed on him entering the season. The Tigers envisioned him as a steady veteran presence capable of working deep into games. Instead, he has become a recurring source of instability, forcing increased bullpen usage and putting added pressure on an offense that has already battled inconsistency.

As Detroit looks ahead in the series, the path forward is clear but not simple: longer starts, fewer early deficits, and a reset from a pitcher who has yet to find his footing.

Because if this pattern continues, the Tigers won’t just be losing games — they’ll be exhausting their  bullpen.

Flaherty's Inconsistency Emerging as Concern for Detroit Tigers Rotation

DETROIT,  — The Detroit Tigers entered the 2026 season with expectations of a deep, reliable starting rotation. But through the first month, right hander Jack Flaherty has become one of the most unpredictable pieces in that plan.

Flahertys latest outing underscored the concern. In a rough start against the Cincinnati Reds, he lasted just two innings, allowing six earned runs and surrendering three home runs, a performance that raised fresh questions about his role moving forward.

Through six starts this season, Flaherty owns a 5.33 ERA and 1.74 WHIP across 25.1 innings, numbers that reflect a troubling lack of consistency.

Highs and Lows Define Early Season

The inconsistency has been stark. At times, Flaherty has looked like a dependable mid rotation arm. He delivered six strong innings with one run allowed against Kansas City and followed that with another solid outing against Minnesota.

But those performances have been offset by multiple short outings in which command issues have plagued him. In half of his starts, he has allowed five or more earned runs and failed to pitch deep into games.

One of the most concerning trends has been his control. Flaherty has issued 22 walks in just over 25 innings, a rate that has put constant pressure on both himself and the bullpen.

Rotation Built for Contention

Detroits offseason moves signaled a win now approach. The addition of Framber Valdez to a rotation already anchored by Tarik Skubal gave the Tigers what many viewed as one of the strongest starting staffs in the American League.

Flaherty, brought back on a 35 million dollar deal, was not expected to be the ace, but he was expected to provide stability.

So far, that stability has been elusive.

Bullpen Feeling the Strain

Short outings from Flaherty have had a ripple effect. The bullpen has been forced to cover extra innings, adding stress to a unit already dealing with injuries, including a recent setback to right hander Connor Seabold.

If the trend continues, the Tigers could face difficult decisions regarding Flahertys role as the season progresses, especially if they remain in the playoff hunt.

Searching for Answers

Despite the struggles, the Tigers know the upside remains. Flaherty has shown he can still dominate when his command is sharp.

The challenge now is consistency.

If he can find it, Detroits rotation could still be among the leagues best. If not, what was once viewed as a strength could become a liability at the worst possible time.
