DETROIT, — The Detroit Tigers entered the 2026 season with expectations of a deep, reliable starting rotation. But through the first month, right hander Jack Flaherty has become one of the most unpredictable pieces in that plan.
Flahertys latest outing underscored the concern. In a rough start against the Cincinnati Reds, he lasted just two innings, allowing six earned runs and surrendering three home runs, a performance that raised fresh questions about his role moving forward.
Through six starts this season, Flaherty owns a 5.33 ERA and 1.74 WHIP across 25.1 innings, numbers that reflect a troubling lack of consistency.
Highs and Lows Define Early Season
The inconsistency has been stark. At times, Flaherty has looked like a dependable mid rotation arm. He delivered six strong innings with one run allowed against Kansas City and followed that with another solid outing against Minnesota.
But those performances have been offset by multiple short outings in which command issues have plagued him. In half of his starts, he has allowed five or more earned runs and failed to pitch deep into games.
One of the most concerning trends has been his control. Flaherty has issued 22 walks in just over 25 innings, a rate that has put constant pressure on both himself and the bullpen.
Rotation Built for Contention
Detroits offseason moves signaled a win now approach. The addition of Framber Valdez to a rotation already anchored by Tarik Skubal gave the Tigers what many viewed as one of the strongest starting staffs in the American League.
Flaherty, brought back on a 35 million dollar deal, was not expected to be the ace, but he was expected to provide stability.
So far, that stability has been elusive.
Bullpen Feeling the Strain
Short outings from Flaherty have had a ripple effect. The bullpen has been forced to cover extra innings, adding stress to a unit already dealing with injuries, including a recent setback to right hander Connor Seabold.
If the trend continues, the Tigers could face difficult decisions regarding Flahertys role as the season progresses, especially if they remain in the playoff hunt.
Searching for Answers
Despite the struggles, the Tigers know the upside remains. Flaherty has shown he can still dominate when his command is sharp.
The challenge now is consistency.
If he can find it, Detroits rotation could still be among the leagues best. If not, what was once viewed as a strength could become a liability at the worst possible time.
