The Detroit Tigers continue to navigate the early part of the 2026 season with cautious optimism—and growing anticipation—as they await the return of franchise icon Justin Verlander.
Before their weekend series against the Texas Rangers, the Tigers provided a measured but encouraging update on the veteran right-hander, who has been sidelined since his lone start of the season on March 30. Verlander recently completed a bullpen session and is scheduled to throw again over the weekend, marking incremental progress in his recovery from left hip inflammation.
Manager A.J. Hinch emphasized that the organization is prioritizing patience over urgency.
“We’re really just trying to get through the bullpens without symptoms,” Hinch said. “The hope is that he’s able to add more and more every session. He’s been able to do that slowly.”
That slow progression has been deliberate. The Tigers are resisting any temptation to accelerate Verlander’s timeline, even as the future Hall of Famer grows increasingly eager to return. According to Hinch, Verlander is “pretty frustrated that it’s not going faster,” but remains committed to the step-by-step process.
A Long Road Back
Verlander’s 2026 campaign got off to a rocky start. In his only outing of the season, he allowed six hits and five earned runs over 3.2 innings—an uncharacteristically tough performance for one of the most dominant pitchers of his generation.
Despite that outing, expectations remain high. Verlander returned to Detroit in the offseason on a one-year, $13 million deal, reuniting with the franchise where he built his Hall of Fame résumé. His presence is viewed not just as a rotation upgrade, but as a stabilizing veteran force for a Tigers team looking to contend.
Tigers Holding Steady
While waiting for Verlander, Detroit has managed to stay competitive. Entering the Rangers series, the Tigers hovered around the .500 mark and sat in second place in the American League Central. Even more encouraging has been their dominance at home, where they’ve built an impressive 10-2 record.
That home success has helped offset inconsistencies in the rotation and lineup, issues that Verlander’s eventual return could help address.
Still, the organization is making one thing clear: there will be no shortcuts.
Looking Ahead
There is growing belief that Verlander could return sometime this month, but key milestones remain—most notably, completing multiple bullpen sessions without discomfort and potentially advancing to a rehab assignment.
For now, the Tigers—and their fan base—are left to watch and wait.
Because when Verlander does return, it won’t just be another pitcher rejoining the rotation. It will be the return of a cornerstone, a symbol of Detroit baseball, and possibly the piece that elevates this team from competitive to dangerous.
